WHAT TO DO IN A ROLLING SITUATION?

A “Rolling” situation is when a problem occurs while the vehicle is in motion which will cause you to pull over to the side of the road. Examples of “rolling” situations are if you hit an animal, in severe weather such as a storm, a flat tire or similar situations that do not involve other drivers or people. Here are some steps that you can follow:

Be sure to turn on your emergency (hazard) blinking lights so other drivers are alerted to your situation so they too can take precautions or prepare to assist. After turning on your hazard lights, look for a safe spot and pull over. Find the safest spot that you can easily get to without taxing the vehicle more. Try to stay far away from traffic, not only on the side of the road but off the road completely unto grass or other.

In a rolling situation, it is best to exit your vehicle and move to a safer location if the vehicle is in any proximity to moving traffic on the road. If not, remain in the car. If you have any safety flags or triangles to inform other drivers and raise your hood to show that you need help. Raising your hood is a universal signal that there is a problem with your car. Raise your hood if it is safe to do so and contact your roadside assistance or emergency personnel.

Safety is of utmost importance during any rolling situation. Make sure that you are safe at all times and do not risk your safety to prevent damage to the vehicle. Take photos of any damage to document the instance, primarily for insurance purposes.
